A general surgeon is a physician trained to perform surgical procedures across a wide range of body systems, with a focus on the abdomen, digestive tract, skin, soft tissues, and endocrine organs like the thyroid and adrenal glands. After medical school, general surgeons complete a five-year surgical residency. Some pursue additional fellowship training in areas like trauma surgery, surgical critical care, minimally invasive surgery, or bariatric surgery.
Despite the name, general surgery isn't vague or nonspecific. It's a defined specialty with deep expertise in operative management of common and complex conditions. General surgeons are often the doctors who handle appendectomies, gallbladder removals, hernia repairs, and colon resections. They also manage breast biopsies, skin and soft tissue excisions, and emergency surgeries for conditions like bowel obstructions or traumatic injuries.
When would you need a general surgeon?
Your primary care doctor or an ER physician will typically refer you to a general surgeon when a condition requires an operation. Gallstones causing repeated attacks, a hernia that's growing or painful, an abnormal breast biopsy result, or an inflamed appendix are all common reasons. General surgeons also evaluate and remove suspicious skin lesions and soft tissue masses when a biopsy is needed for diagnosis.
Many procedures that once required large open incisions are now performed laparoscopically or with robotic assistance. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), for example, uses a few small incisions and typically allows patients to go home the same day. Hernia repairs, anti-reflux surgeries, and certain colon procedures are also routinely done with minimally invasive techniques, which generally mean less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.
General surgeons operate in hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, and trauma centers. In rural or community settings, they often fill an even broader role, handling cases that might go to a subspecialist in a larger city.
